No I haven’t gone mad.
I promise you I haven’t.
No seriously. I am not going to burst into a few verses of “Oops I did it again” but rather I want to talk about career makeovers. (Do you know how hard it is to find a non gratuitous pic of Britney for the blog! Sheesh!)
The picture above shows the singer in her role as Abby on the hit TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Faced with a string of bad news about her sanity, child protection issues, problems about her singing career and all out war on her personal brand, this would seem to be a master stroke to resurrect her flagging career. With her name all over the news documenting her being able to spend time with her children and a possible chance to resurrect her career at the upcoming MTV music awards this would be a career coaches dream. Maybe I should chase that gig…err on second thoughts!!!
She is not the first famous (or less famous) person to have to come back from the brink of disaster and go for a career makeover. In England the entrepreneur Rachel Elnaugh wrote a book Business Nightmares about having to come back from the brink of disaster when her company collapsed. One of the more famous turn arounds featured in the book includes Gerald Ratner. Need I say more. All in all though these stories serve as a great indicator that careerists can come back from the brink of disaster. Take some time to reflect and position their careers and personal brands back to their former glory and in some cases even better.
So the challenge to you is this? Do you need a career makeover? You may not be facing disaster but it might be time for you to think about how you want to position yourself, whether now at this point in the current economic crisis or sometime in the not too distant future. If so take some lessons from Britney, Rachel or Gerald it could put you in good stead.
