So here’s the deal. I have had some fire from certain quarters about why I left Facebook. I mean come it on, it’s not really that big a deal is it. I also got hell from some of the students who I made contact with on Bebo. So here is my explanation.
Social networks are great. I think that they can be used to leverage contacts both socially and professionally. For me I wanted to focus on those networks which are more manageable and align with my brand more. So I stuck with LinkedIn and Twitter as the main ones to have my attention. I have gotten rid of a number of others including facebook with its incessant poking and unwanted invites. For others this is a great way to maintain their profile or support their personal brand but for me it just wasn’t. I would also note that one of the things that irked me on some social networks was inappropriate or personal stuff being posted on my walls, profile pictures of people I chose to add (put your clothes on will ya!!), tagged photos, not mention lack of privacy and the high maintenance of policing such platforms.
I am once again reverting to more face to face networking. Through seminars, breakfast meetings, speaking opportunities and a few of the more selective professional networks I am in. Each to their own. We move on.
